Understand the research. Keep the conversation human.

See what CAPITAL is studying, what an AI research tool may support, and where your care team remains responsible.

Three moments where clearer communication may help.

The research looks beyond a single appointment. Preparation, the day of care, and recovery each create different questions and pressures.

  1. 01 · Before

    Prepare

Understand instructions, organize questions, and know when to contact the care team.

    Care-team task
Check comprehension, identify barriers, and make the plan clear.
    Human responsibility
The care team confirms advice and decisions.
  2. 02 · During

    Stay connected

Know who is responsible and how information moves through the team.

    Care-team task
Support reliable handoffs without obscuring clinical judgement.
    Human responsibility
Clinicians remain accountable for monitoring and care.
  3. 03 · After

    Recover

Revisit information, understand next steps, and recognize when help is needed.

    Care-team task
Make follow-up, escalation, and continuity easier to navigate.
    Human responsibility
A person, not a tool, handles urgent or individual concerns.

What a research tool may support—and what remains human.

May support

  • Explaining provided information in plainer language
  • Helping people organize questions
  • Repeating preparation information
  • Directing a person back to the care team

Does not replace

  • A clinician’s diagnosis or judgement
  • Advice specific to your medical situation
  • Emergency or urgent care
  • The relationship with your healthcare team

Will AI make decisions about my care?

CAPITAL’s research is designed around human oversight. A tool may support information or communication, but clinical decisions and responsibility remain with qualified healthcare professionals.

What does perioperative mean?

Perioperative care covers the time before, during, and after a procedure or surgery—including preparation, anesthesia, monitoring, recovery, and communication with your care team.

What is SOPHIE?

SOPHIE is the conversational interface for the Digital Teammate research project. It is being explored as a way to support preoperative preparation, questions, and understanding. It is not presented here as a deployed clinical service.

How can patients shape the research?

Patient partners can help choose priorities, review language, identify risks, improve participation, and challenge assumptions about what is useful. You do not need technical expertise to contribute lived experience.

This site explains research; it does not provide individual medical advice.
